Lauren & Khalid (founders)

Hi, we’re Lauren and Khalid, and Tap n’ Flap Sensory grew naturally from our family life.
Life hasn’t been especially quiet or predictable. It has been full of big feelings, learning curves, laughter, mess, and a lot of figuring things out as we go.
We’re parents to four very different neurodivergent children. One thing they’ve shown us is that no two children experience the world in the same way. What helps one may not help another, and we’ve learned that through trial, error, patience, and plenty of humbling moments.
The name Tap n’ Flap comes from our youngest. As a baby, she tapped everything. If something wasn’t hard enough to tap, she would flap it instead. She often ignored the toy itself and went for the label or the box. Watching how she explored put us in awe of how different each child’s experience of the world can be.
What our children do share though is love, honesty, loud laughter, and the confidence to ask questions. We are open with them and they are open with us. We have created a home where feelings are talked about. They teach us just as much as we guide them.
Our journey into sensory wellbeing did not start with a plan. It grew from everyday life. Like many parents, we tried different ideas and tools. Some helped for a while. Some didn’t. We have had days that felt manageable and days that didn’t. But one small idea kept helping during separations.
The Tots Box.
It didn’t solve everything. It simply made goodbyes feel clearer and less overwhelming. It gave our children something they could see and take part in. From the very first box Lauren made when our son was little, to the moment it quite literally fell out of the loft while we were getting the Christmas decorations down, we were reminded how much that simple idea had meant to our family. Over time, we began to feel it might help other families too, and Tap n’ Flap Sensory slowly grew from there.
Lauren has studied inclusion, teaching, and neurodivergence, from autism to dyslexia. Still, most of what shapes what we create comes from real life at home and seeing what actually helps on ordinary days. She also shares the occasional YouTube video based on what our children are learning at school, passing on simple ideas that make things easier at home, including a few helpful times tables tricks picked up along the way.
From The Tots Box to books, resources, and blogs, everything here comes from lived experience and a genuine wish to make things feel a little lighter for families. We’re still learning, still listening, and still getting things wrong sometimes, just like everyone else.
If something here helps your child feel a little more secure, or helps you feel a little less alone, that truly means the most to us.
Lauren and Khalid
