We're Lauren and Khalid. Parents of four, creators, professional overthinkers and experienced chaos coordinators.

Our adventure together has taken us further than we ever imagined. In 2008, we packed up our lives and moved to Hong Kong. Living on the other side of the world opened our eyes to new cultures, new ways of thinking and a different perspective on family life. It taught us that there is rarely only one right way to do something, a lesson that's stayed with us ever since.

Long before Tap n' Flap became a business, it was simply how we survived everyday life.

Between university, college, work and raising four very different children, we became accidental problem-solvers. We were constantly inventing little life hacks, adapting routines, simplifying everyday tasks and finding practical ways around the challenges family life kept throwing at us. Friends and family would often say, "That's a good idea," not realising we'd only come up with it because we'd needed it ourselves.

Those little ideas gradually became products.

Those products became books.

Those books became blogs.

And eventually... they became Tap n' Flap.

People often ask where the name came from.

It wasn't created in a branding meeting or dreamt up by a marketing agency.

It came from our youngest daughter, Sameena.

When she's excited, happy or overwhelmed, she taps and flaps as part of her stimming. It felt completely fitting that the name of our family business should come from the little girl who unknowingly inspired so much of our journey.

Tap n' Flap isn't about pretending we've got all the answers.

It's about sharing what we've learned, the mistakes we've made, the ideas that worked and the ones that didn't.

No filters.

No pretending we've got it all figured out.

Just honest family life, practical ideas, a little psychology, plenty of humour and the occasional opinion that might make you stop and think.

Welcome to our wonderfully chaotic world.

People often ask us how we manage.

The truth is, our children aren't perfect, and neither are we. They have bad days, they argue, they get frustrated and they make mistakes, just like everyone else.

But they're also kind.

They're funny.

They're thoughtful.

They're incredibly loving.

They have enormous respect for themselves, for each other and for us.

They're fiercely loyal.

And, perhaps most importantly, they're incredibly street-smart.

We think a lot of that comes from one simple family rule...

We've never hidden the world from them.

We've never believed in sugar-coating life. If they're old enough to accidentally come across something online, hear about something in the playground or see it on the news, then they're old enough to hear about it from us first.

That means we've had conversations many parents would rather avoid. Stranger danger. Online grooming. Manipulation. The tactics some adults use to exploit children. We also talk openly about real-life news stories when children have been harmed or abducted, not to frighten them, but to help them recognise warning signs, trust their instincts and understand that the world isn't always as kind as we'd like it to be.

Some people may think that's too much.

We see it differently.

We believe knowledge doesn't steal a child's innocence. We believe it helps protect it.

We'd rather answer an awkward question around the kitchen table than have our children learn the wrong lesson from social media, the playground or someone who doesn't have their best interests at heart.

We're parents first, always. But we also want our children to genuinely enjoy spending time with us. We want them to know they can laugh with us, confide in us, challenge us, ask awkward questions and trust us with the things they might be afraid to tell anyone else.

Our home is full of debates, different opinions and healthy disagreements. We don't expect our children to agree with us all the time. We simply hope they'll always feel confident enough to question something that doesn't sit right.

We can't wrap our children in bubble wrap...

But we can help them recognise the sharp edges of the world before they stumble across them alone.
